Skate sessions are few and far between, but on the occasion when I can remove myself from the workstation and spend some time rolling around, it’s guaranteed that some mediocre magic will go down. In other words, I don’t let the fact that I suck at skating keep me from doing it.
My bag of tricks is pretty shallow these days (and I like it that way), so I can always reach in and find something hazardous to do on my lunch break. Good thing that Jose Garcia Diaz is a skilled photographer and can make my skating look sweeter than bread pudding with chocolate milk."

2K By Gingham, the artist-based t-shirt company now entering its 12th year, which represents over 100 artists' designs globally, will kick off their highly anticipated, inaugural exhibition featuring original artwork by 40 of its artist collaborators.

The 2K t-shirt line, which began in Japan, was sparked by a passion for art and a mission to bring the arts to a larger audience. An initial journey to the US to seek out original artistic images was met with frustration as the majority of t-shirt prints failed to move beyond highly recognizable, mainstream artists. This experience launched the quest to bring a broader scope of artists into the public eye, thus establishing the roots of the 2K artist t-shirt editions.

Together with New Image Art gallery in Los Angeles, 2K By Gingham will showcase the work of 40 artists from the t-shirt line for their premiere US Exhibition and Pop-Up Shop. Included will be well-known artists such as Milton Glaser, Janette Beckman, Deanne Cheuk, and David Shrigley in addition to many talented, up-and-coming artists in the spirit of 2K By Gingham.

The Pop-up shop will contain collections from past seasons as well as the new Woman’s Line, which debuts this spring, and other exciting paraphernalia from the artists.

Please join us for an evening of art, celebration, and 2K By Gingham t-shirt shopping. For the first two hours of the evening, Mezcal and Tequila tasting will be available, courtesy of Metl Reserva Especial. Throughout the night, drinks will be provided by Primo Beer, Hawai’i’s original beer. Dublub.com’s Hoseh and DJ Nobody will generously supply the evening’s music.

Tanya Morgan, Brooklynati Album Dropping Soon

Perhaps one of the most anticipated underground hip-hop albums of the year, the latest effort by Tanya Morgan (the same minds who were behind The Bridge and Tanya Morgan Is A Rap Group) is not only a listenable pleasure, but also an open invitation to visit their fantastical hometown of Brooklynati. Members Von Pea, Ilyas, and Donwil set out to create an LL Cool J-like legacy in the form of Tanya Morgan, and the best part is they don’t take themselves too seriously. The lyrics are genuine and the beats are large, but unlike many of their peers, Tanya Morgan successfully avoids rap’s tedium, and I’m pretty sure this is just the beginning of their tour de force.
A lot of the hype about this album probably came from the rumors of these guys being the next A Tribe Called Quest. I’ll let you decide whether they are worthy of that comparison, but I can’t wait to hear more from these dudes. Seriously good hip-hop with civic command. The album drops May 12th, so get a one-way bus ticket to Brooklynati and enjoy the trip. Category: writing, creative marketing

I skated all the crappy little spots in my crappy little town every day and loved it because of him. It was only ten or maybe fifteen years ago. He was the best... the best because he loved skateboarding. Foundation. Shortys. Big cargo trousers and little t-shirts. Forget a “where are they now?” interview and forget a “I-need-a-paycheck” comeback. Just pay a little respect to the dude who got more done than anyone. Lest we forget the quirky guy behind the spectacles and curly mop. If you can find it, watch the TWS vid "Greatest Hits" and the Church of Skatan video, "Santa Barbara."

In biology, mutations are changes to the nucleotide sequence of the genetic material of an organism. Mutations can be caused by copying errors in the genetic material during cell division, by exposure to ultraviolet or ionizing radiation, chemical mutagens, or viruses, or can be induced by the organism, itself, by cellular processes such as hypermutation. In multicellular organisms with dedicated reproductive cells, mutations can be subdivided into germ line mutations, which can be passed on to descendants through the reproductive cells, and somatic mutations, which involve cells outside the dedicated reproductive group and which are not usually transmitted to descendants. If the organism can reproduce asexually through mechanisms such as cuttings or budding the distinction can become blurred. For example, plants can sometimes transmit somatic mutations to their descendants asexually or sexually where flower buds develop in somatically mutated parts of plants. A new mutation that was not inherited from either parent is called a de novo mutation. The source of the mutation is unrelated to the consequence, although the consequences are related to which cells are affected.

Pop Speed came next from this dream I had. I was supposed to wake up early and meet some buddies to surf one morning, and just couldn't get out bed. So I had this wild image during that morning dream of this Roy Lichtenstein looking wave, with a huge fist wearing brass knuckles coming out of the tube.

Venom Tracks came about out of my love of Italian sports cars, and my fear of American Rattlesnakes. I wanted to capture an idea of some wild driving experience where the car, the snake, and the road became one." -- Ryan Stephens

It was a special mail day for me yesterday. I opened the letterbox to discover a nice package from Dean and Matt at DicE Magazine. This happens to be the 25th issue of their celebrated motozine [and you a-holes never sent me the 24th issue!]. It came with a little bundle of Crayons to color the cover (colouring book style), but my daughter took those for herself. Maybe she will share with me long enough to allow me to color the front of the book. Or maybe I will just let her color the cover herself. Like always, this issue is filled with loads of sweet bikes and crappy text. I'm pretty sure these guys are completely wasted when they produce this magazine, but that's why I like it. Shine on you crazy diamonds, shine on. If you're into old choppers and you have black grease packed under your fingernails, I highly suggest picking up this magazine. Soon to hit catwalks in Japan is the HRP-4C fashion robot. It is expected that these robots will soon replace the need for human fashion models, which would subsequently result in hundreds of thousands of young model-hopefuls finally being able to eat food instead of narcotics.

Daniel Johnston: At Home Live

Footage and audio tracks from Stephen Tompkins’ A\V sessions with Daniel Johnston have now been released as a collection named Daniel Johnston: At Home Live. Tompkins filmed several hours of raw footage at Johnston’s home in Waller, Texas in 1999 with the only onlookers being neighboring cows. Supposedly, Tompkins retained the film for ten years before releasing it, considering it an audiovisual time capsule. It’s not like the ultimate collection of Johnston awesomeness or anything, but it’s pretty good. If you liked The Devil & Daniel Johnston, this is a good video, too. Just see for yourself. I haven’t showered in 3 days.

“I’ve always been into old cars and motorcycles, and on a recent trip back to my small hometown in Idaho, I found a ‘48 Chrysler Royal that I fell in love with. This was the beginning of my fascination with old Chryslers; the Fluid Drive transmission, Spitfire flathead engine, and the intricate details of the interior have made these classics one of my favorite autos. I agree with Richard Prince that cars are moving pieces of art. So… that leads me to this 1953 Chrysler Windsor, which I purchased as part of an exhibit I wanted to do, where all of my artwork would be hanging inside the vehicle. Day Labor Glove for Analog Part I

“The Day Labor Glove is one of the first things I designed for Analog when I began working with the brand. I was asked to create a basic pipe snowboarding glove… and I’m a big fan of leather gloves, especially ones made with nice & supple un-dyed hide. Since I wanted to design a glove that had the simple appearance of a work glove, I kept it basic with some leather panels and a cozy lining to keep you warm while working up yonder. I like that it doesn’t look like a snowboard glove, but that it looks like a work glove you’d maybe buy at the cattle feed store. The Day Labor Glove was such a hit that it has been updated and will be offered next season with an entirely new design. Wait until you see that one. I named it Day Labor in tribute to the crews of people out on the curb, waving their hands... just looking to get some cash in exchange for an honest days work. That’s glove love, man.” – Kelly D. "A Man and His Horse is our second photography edition from Hot Shot Alison Grippo and its subject and setting make it a fitting follow-up for yesterday's Koolman. Alison captured her cop not that long ago, but the photo has a certain timelessness to it, in part because it's black + white, but also because mounted police officers seem more nostalgic than practical in these modern times. (Shouldn't they be on Segways or something by now?)

As with Kevin's commemorations of decay, Alison's lens is often focused on the gritty, everyday city. A city girl like myself, she too finds beauty in what might be dismissed as ugly or overlooked entirely. Unlike me, she's brave enough to be a street shooter who doesn't just survey the landscape. I'm always impressed by someone who's brave enough to take a stranger's picture. (And this one a cop no less!) He seems at ease too — while he is obviously aware that his picture is being taken, the moment captured is private and tender. Such incongruities afoot! Aren't cops tough guys? Aren't the streets mean? Not always, just sometimes." -- Jen Bekman

The Cycle Zombies crew hosted a get-together at the Hurley headquarters this weekend. The 2nd Annual Motorcycle Rally & BBQ Skate Session was a sweet success with plenty of radness on two wheels and psychotic ripping on four wheels. Jay Adams was in attendance and mesmerized Kelly's daughter Daphne. Eric Dressen destroyed the tranny with some ruthless fs grindage, and whoever was operating the grill made a delicious frankfurter.
