Coverage From Illustrative 09 Event

Yokoland: "Anachronisma" 25 x 12.5 cm, 2009

Keiichi Tanaami: "C03" 50 x 70 cm, 2009

Illustrative is the leading international forum for contemporary illustration and graphic arts. Every year at two different creative cities around the world, the exhibition displays an inspiring collection of current illustrative und graphical art with over 600 works from more than 60 artists.

Over the course of two weeks, the festival celebrates the illustrative arts, presents new talents and trends, exchanges ideas, marvels at progressive technologies, and rediscovers forgotten styles. Illustrative features an exclusive exhibition and shows works from 60 internationally recognised illustrators in addition to hosting conferences, a film program, and parties. Illustrative displays not only the quality and fantasy of the latest graphic arts but also shows how the visual effects of graphic design, illustration, book art, comics, concept art, and animation spill into and influence the field of art.

The exhibition is accompanied by the Young Illustrator Award. The exhibition highlighting the contest winners will display the most intuitive inclinations of the genre and is an exciting measure for new trends.

Established in Berlin in 2006, Illustrative has been held twice in Berlin (2006/2007), once in Paris (2007), and once in Zürich (2008). To guarantee the topicality of the exhibition, before every Illustrative the art works are reconsidered by a curatorial committee lead by Berlin-based curator Pascal Johanssen. The View Out of Our Temporary Studio Window

"As some of you may know, I have temporarily left California and moved up yonder to an empty space on the map called Idaho. It's pretty quiet, and there is plenty of room for my daughter to play in the yard. The other day I looked out my office window and saw these two fellers mowing my lawn." --Kelly D. Williams, ArtWontSaveYou.com

Custom Converse Weapon 86 Colorway by Distrikt Design

Title: Converse Weapon Hi 86
Color: Brown leather upper, Eggplant lining, and Butter Yellow laces.
Designed by: Distrikt Creative Group

“I’m the farthest thing from a sneakerhead, but when our sample of the Custom Weapon Hi by Converse was delivered to the studio, I was pretty freaking ecstatic. These shoes turned out awesome and I really liked the color, so we thought it proper to take a few photos before I laced up and destroyed them on some griptape. Special thanks to Jason Thome and Damion Silver at Converse for letting me design the shoe.” – Kelly D. Williams

ILLUSTRATIVE 2009: From Neocraft to Graphic Novel

Paris, Zurich and now Berlin: ILLUSTRATIVE 2009 will return to the creative capital to celebrate the cutting-edge works of contemporary graphic art for the fifth time around. From the 15th of October to the 1st of November, works ranging from drawing, graphic prints, painting and monumental mural collages to graphically inspired 3D-illustrations, book art and animation will be on show. With more than 60 artists from all across the world, ILLUSTRATIVE brings together an inspiring cornucopia of visual contemporary culture in the Villa Elisabeth located in the heart of Berlin.

ILLUSTRATIVE showcases an international scene of artist-designers, whose works have been inspired by subculture movements like comic and graffiti as well as by applied arts like illustration and book art. The exhibition explores the merging of infinite materials and techniques in widely unprecedented combinations, which challenge learned ways of seeing – e.g. the latest development, where illustration and graphics are translated into the third dimension, or new narrative strategies in 3D-animation.

Chasing by Alison Grippo: The Friday Night Fights in NYC

Here's another book from members of the Distrikt family, Alison Grippo. After 30,000 or so photos of boxers, fights, kickboxers, and even a few empty rings the book is finally complete and available. Chasing | The Friday Night Fights NYC is about the portions of boxing we do not generally consider as part of the sport, the love, the loss, and the beauty of what goes into the "fight". .. The book contains 76 images of some seen and unseen photographs from the last few years. For more details and to order a copy, visit Blurb.com"What I learned, in the end, is that a boxer and his team have the endurance and fortitude that comes only with unshakable faith in self. In their minds there is no question where the six hours of daily training, the unpaid amateur bouts, the makeshift shared dressing rooms, will lead. There will be a title fight in Vegas, they will walk the streets of their neighborhood as heroes, as their heroes did before them. They don't speak of loss or prepare for the shock of a setback. Why would they? Then they would have to admit the possibility exists that what they are doing my result merely in defeat." -- Alison Grippo, Distrikt Senior Photographer
